We left Grand Sierra in Reno (6) on Wednesday, May 26, heading east across Nevada on I-80 which isn't very interesting and spent the night at the Iron Horse RV Resort in Elko(7). The site was only okay, but Nick, you would have loved it. The Iron Horse is aptly named as the train tracks are not too far away and in full view.
Using TripAdvisor.com we located Machi's Saloon & Grill downtown and had a super meal. We split a Chicken Parmigiana over noodles. And, yes, if this blog focuses on what and where we ate, get used to it!!!! It is a family tradition!
Leaving Elko the next morning we crossed the rest of Nevada and entered Utah and traveled along the southern edge of the Great Salt Lake and as we reached Salt Lake City we headed North where we arrived in Sunset, Utah at Charlie's Service (8). Charlie's is owned by Charlie and Vicki DuBose, friends who, like us, used to have an Alfa SeeYa. Where we chose to trade ours in, they were victims of terrible fire that completely destroyed theirs along with their home. They have the greatest place to have your motor home serviced, well worth driving out of the way to have it done. They provide electric hookup spots and you can be in the motor home when it is being serviced. They do great work and also sell and install RV toys which of course, we did have them do. Thanks to Justin, Tom and Gilbert for their super help.
John and Jane Hiss, Alfa SeeYa owners who now live in Idaho, were also there and it was good catching up with them. Charlie and Vicki led us all to Eden, UT for dinner at Eats of Eden where both Helga and I had Cajun Pasta which was quite good. Then we stopped at Farr's Ice Cream shop where I tried the licorice ice cream and it was good.
On Saturday, we left Sunset and headed into Wyoming. Big sky country always impresses me but Helga says it isn't green enough. Taking pictures with my cell phone camera, Verizon Droid Incredible, through the windshield, while driving, isn't going to produce the best pictures, but this gives you an idea of what it is like.
We arrived at the Rawlins, Wyoming KOA (9) in mid afternoon with the wind howling. This is a typical overnight stop along I-80 and is just a basic place to stay. What was a surprise was the restaurant we found through TripAdvisor.com, the Aspen House. In the dusty western town there is an old mansion converted to a restaurant and what a restaurant it is. I, unfortunately, picked the wrong dish, a Cowboy Rib-eye Steak with Shrimp and BBQ sauce. While it was okay, I really should have realized that BBQ sauce was not what I wanted. Helga had the regular Rib-eye steak which was excellent as I found out on a sandwich the next day. But the menu was extensive with many surprise choices. We both opted for steak because of rave reviews but if we had stayed in Rawlins any longer we would have returned to sample other dishes.
Sunday found us traveling through the rest of Wyoming and entering Nebraska where we stopped at Sidney, home of Cabela's, and stayed in their RV Park (10). Helga checked out Cabela's while I tried to repair our electrical cord that supplies turn signals etc. to our "Toad", the CRV. For some reason it stopped charging the CRV while towing which caused us to get it jump started twice so far on this trip. After our great dinner the night before we opted for McDonald's this night!
Monday was Memorial Day. I want to thank all those in the military, many of whom have given their lives for our freedom, and their families. God Bless You.
We drove longer than usual that day and crossed into the Central Time Zone. We crossed the majority of Nebraska and arrived in the late afternoon in Lincoln, the state capital and home of the Big Red, the University of Nebraska. We're staying at Camp-A-Way (11). Nice park but somewhat noisy being between two freeways. TripAdvisor led us to the Haymarket area where most restaurants were closed for the holiday but Lazlos Brewery and Grill was open and it was wonderful. Helga, who loves Baby Back Ribs from Tony Roma's found out Lazlo's were great. I had a French Dip sandwich which, though on the salty side was very good. The beer was excellent!
We're going to spend at least a couple of days here before continuing east.
